Weekend on the Rock, July 10-12, 2015: The Bloom!

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of July 10-12, 2015:

1. Bainbridge in Bloom
When: Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: At secret locations around the Island, but you get to find out at 9 a.m. by going to the Bloom Hub at the Filipino American Hall, 7566 High School Rd NE. That’s where you’ll get your guide, directions, and a wrist band for admission.
Why: Beautiful gardens. Read more here.

Day-of-event tickets will be for sale at the Bloom Hub.

2. Discovery Friday
When: Friday, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Where: Kids Discovery Museum, 301 Ravine Lane
Why: Science-themed activities for the kids.

Free with admission or membership.

3. Sketching on Location with Amy D’Apice
When: Friday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E.
Why: A seven-session course teaches students to record their impressions and visions on paper. Come for the series or drop in as you wish.

$260. Member and student discounts are available for the series. Drop-in rate is $40 per class.

4. Summer Movie Matinee: Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird
When: Friday, 3:30-5 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Chevy Chase, Big Bird, and a road trip in the 80s. Rated G.

5. Bainbridge Island Arts Walk
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: No, it’s not the first Friday of July, but that was already taken up by July 4, so you get this special Second Friday Arts Walk instead.

6. In Concert: The Julie Duke Band
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: The Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way E, #120
Why: The band gets down on the Plaza for the “First Friday” Arts Walk.

7. Floralscapes: Sandy Haight
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: The Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way E, #120
Why: The poster artist for the 2015 Bainbridge in Bloom Garden Tour and the 2016 Skagit County Tulip Festival shares her close-up views of plant life. Also see Bainbridge Island artist Karen Chaussabel’s encaustic and ink compositions.

8. The Bard at Bloedel 2015: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 7 p.m.
Where: The Bloedel Reserve, Northeast Dolphin Drive
Why: Bloedel becomes a forest outside Athens, and Duke Theseus is getting married. Woodland faeries and a love potion included. Gates open at 6 p.m. Picnics will be allowed in the meadow after 6 p.m.

Midsummer Night's DreamPatrons may enter the grounds earlier by paying a reduced same-day-only rate of $5 valid after 4:30 p.m. Patrons must be on the Will Call list or present their ticket(s) to Bloedel Reserve to take advantage of this offer. Get tickets here.

9. Friday Night Sacred Dance: 5Rhythms
When: Friday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Dayaalu Center, 159 Wyatt Way
Why: Ecstatic dance meditation for all. The system gets a registered trademark after it, but I can’t remember how to do that on my keyboard so you’ll have to imagine it. Get the idea below.

10. The Mama Rags + Duke Evers at Spacecraft
When: Friday, 7:30-10 p.m.
Where: Rolling Bay Hall, 10598 NE Valley Road
Why: The Rags are kind of seventies rock, hippy, trippy. Then Duke Evers mixes that with a little New Wave.

11. Kitsap Humane Society’s 22nd Annual Pet Walk-a-Thon
When: Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Downtown Poulsbo
Why: Dogs, 5K Fun Run and Walk, 1K Walk, Kids Dash, Pet Costume and Talent Contests, a Vendor Fir, and lots of fur.

12. Saturday Morning Painting Jam with Amy D’Apice
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts 151 Winslow Way E.
Why: Amy D’Apice leads you in plein air painting. The series runs Saturday mornings, July 11 to August 8. Sign up for the series or drop in.

Register at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts or call (206) 842-3132. $300. Member and student discounts are available. The drop-in rate is $65 per class.

13. First Saturday Trunk Show: Dawn McNamara’s Ceramic Arts
When: Saturday, 12-4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (Museum Store), 550 Winslow Way East
Why: McNamara puts elephants in yoga poses and makes teapots with legs.

14. New Trail Celebration
When: Saturday, 2-4 p.m.
Where: HeyDay Farm, 4370 Old Mill Rd
Why: There’s a new park-to-park connector trail in the Park District trail system. You are invited to walk the trail from Eagledale Park or Blakely Harbor Park and, along the way, stop in at the HeyDay Farm open house for some “farm-fresh treats.” Park at Eagledale Park or Blakely Harbor Park.

15. Sensory Kids Night at the Museum
When: Saturday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Kids Discovery Museum 301 Ravine Ln
Why: It’s time for parents of kids with sensory processing challenges to get a night out while their kids get playtime and a gluten-free pizza dinner. Recommended for ages 3.5 to 12. Participants must be able to use the bathroom independently.

Registration required by noon on Friday. $30 per child of members and $40 per child of nonmembers. $10 off per sibling. For info. call (206) 855-4650 or visit www.kidimu.org.

16. Free Concert on Winslow Green
When: Saturday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Winslow Green at Winslow Way and Madison Avenue
Why: Ranger and the Re-Arrangers host a concert featuring special guest Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews, who has won several national jazz awards, including Outstanding Soloist at the Lionel Hampton festival.

Admission is free, and the band will collect donations.

17. Planetarium Show: “Planets, the Milky Way, and the Summer Sky”
When: Saturday, 8:30-10 p.m.
Where: Ritchie Observatory, 11299 Arrow Point Dr.
Why: Astronomer Steve Ruhl will examine the nature of the summer night sky and the accompanying seasonal changes. There’s a pre-show Special Kids Show at 6 with Dr. Erica (I’m not sure who that is but I bet she knows about planets and stars and quarks and stuff like that).

Free to members. $2 donation suggested for nonmembers. $5 for families.
