1. Hannah’s Hopeful Hearts 2015

Where: Grace Church, 8595 NE Day Road
Why: Dr. Jim Olson and Dr. Michael Jensen, pre-eminent warriors on the pediatric cancer battlefield, are sharing the stage for the first time ever to talk about their cutting-edge research. They will be joined by St. Paul de Vence in concert. Proceeds go to pediatric cancer research at Fred Hutchinson & Seattle Children’s Research Institute. 2. Parenting Right in the Middle—Tween Territory: Expert Insights
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Where: Woodward Middle School, 9125 Sportsman Club Rd NE
Why: A parent’s guide to their tweenage kids. Julie Metzger, founder of Great Expectations, which is a puberty education series that has been offered on Bainbridge for many years; Stephanie Thomas, a victim advocate in the Seattle Police Department’s Vice/High Risk Victim’s Unit; and Dr. Leslie Walker, Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Seattle Children’s Hospital, are the speakers. 3. 9th Annual Bainbridge Island Walk MS
When: Saturday, 9-11:30 a.m.
Where: Bainbridge High School, 9330 NE High School Rd., to start
Why: Follow the easy, kid-firendly walk through downtown Winslow to raise money to support the National MS Society. Enjoy free Pegasus coffee, BonBon chocolates, nutritious delicious vegetarian chili with Pan d’Amore bread, massages, face painting, and live dance music by the HEP Replacements and the Bainbridge High School Band. 4. Farmers’ Market

Where: Town Square/City Hall Park
Why: Opening Day of the Farmers’ Market! See all your old friends and forage.
5. Library U—The Geology of Bainbridge Island and Puget Sound
When: Saturday, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Where: Bethany Lutheran Church, 7968 Finch Road NE
Why: This week’s topic is Bainbridge Beaches and Bluffs: Geology on the Edge. The features of our shoreline are the result of geologic processes acting on a complex glacial landscape. Hugh Shipman, Coastal Geologist at the Department of Ecology, will explain how steep slopes and landslides, storms and waves action, and abundant gravel—not to mention people—conspire to create our diverse but always changing shoreline.

6. Book Sale: Friends of the Library
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave N
Why: Pick up your summer reading and music at the library’s sale.
7. Eleven Winery Features Kareem Kandi
When: Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Eleven Winery, 7671 NE Day Road
Why: Because Kandi’s sax makes ear candy.
The winery is open for tours and tastings from 12-5 p.m. Live music is from 1-4 p.m.
8. Sensory Kids Night: Autism & SPD Support Program
When: Saturday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Kids Discovery Museum, 301 Ravine Lane NE
Why: Drop off the kids and go have a grownup night out. This event is for kids 3.5-12 years old with autism or other sensory processing challenge. The kids get museum playtime led by a therapist and museum staff and pizza.

9. Planetarium Show: “Optical Telescopes: Past, Future, & Amateur”

Why: BPAA President Steve Ruhl talks about telescopes. He’ll help you figure out what telescope you should get.

10. Uncovering the Artist’s Book
When: Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art Auditorium, 554 Winslow Way E.
Why: A panel of regional book artists talks about bookmaking. The panel will be moderated by Lou Cabeen, artist and Associate Professor in the School of Art at the University of Washington. She will be joined by book artists Mare Blocker, Catherine Alice Michaelis, and Sande Wascher-James.. An informal reception will follow at 4 in the BIMA Bistro.

11. Thor Hanson: The Triumph of Seeds
When: Sunday, 3-4 p.m.
Where: Eagle Harbor Book Company, 157 Winslow Way East
Why: Award-winning conservationist Thor Hanson explores the story of seeds by asking why they are so successful? For much of evolutionary history, seeds did not even exist, but once they evolved they became an efficient mechanism for plants to reproduce, protect themselves, and travel long distances.
12. First Sundays Concert
When: Sunday, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center, 376 Brien Drive
Why: Classical guitarist Michael Partington performs works by Guiliani, Carulli, Sor, Piazzolla, Mertz, Johanson and Albeniz.

13. Poetry Reading by Kathleen Flenniken
When: Sunday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve, 7571 NE Dolphin Dr.
Why: Kathleen Flenniken, Washington State Poet Laureate from 2012-2014, will read some of her selected works in the former Bloedel Residence in honor of Poetry Month.
